Hands-on Review: LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0 8547 Robot

I’ve already tried the Mindstorms NXT 2.0 in its full capacity. So what can I say about it from my own experience? I think it’s awesome! Why? First of all it seems to me that Mindstorm is a new generation of intelligent toys, it is a combination of Lego building tradition and advanced electronic system which includes software pack and different sensors – they make your robot to seem alive. The toy can do everything and maybe more than everything your favorite cat does: to move, to see, to feel touches and to distinguish colors It is designed (a robot, but not your favorite cat… Though who knows?:) for children of 10 years old and up and adults so everyone of your family can enjoy it. Because in our family it captured everybody’s attention. It takes no more than 60 minutes to construct a toy using instructions and then to program it. There are almost endless variations of creating different types of the toy (if I dare to call it so) so you will never be bored about it – just don’t be lazy to use your fantasy.

How to build a robot

Using instructions makes the process of creating a robot just like a piece of cake. Doing everything on my own didn’t help so don’t waste your time – take out the manual from the box first of all. The set includes a booklet which shows how to build and program a toy step by step. This toy is rather complex so one hour is not too much for creating it. Afterwards you will play with your creature for days and months. But while I constructed it I visited MINDSTORMS website a few times – I was looking for ways to use and change the software to make it appropriate for my own model.

This digital pet is full of electronic filling of NXT. It includes such clever words as: advanced programmable microcontroller, Interactive Servo Motors, several sensors of vision, move and touch, icon-based drag-and-drop programing software, USB and Bluetooth connections to advance the robot by PC and others “bla-bla-bla” – all these things make this toy up-to-date. NXT is a little brain of the Lego robot which provides computer-controlling. It includes a 32-bit microprocessor, a large matrix display, input and output ports, and a speaker. Three Interactive Servo Motors give you a complete control so you take in your hands all things that the robot can do. Also robot has four sensors. The first of them is the Ultrasonic Sensor, one of two sensors that gives this robot vision. Thanks to it a toy can catch the movement, bypass different obstacles, measure the distance and so on. Other two sensors give the robot feel of touch. There is one more sensor that can distinguish colors or can be used as a lamp.

MINDSTORM Software provides the programming of the robot. Use the PC to create your own requirement to the model.

So as you can see, Lego is a universal toy for everybody in the family. The digital equipment makes robot like electronic pet that can analyze the environment and give more fun for its owners. And guys there is no way out for you – tomorrow you will go to the shop and buy this toy, won’t you?
